Spring Creek Homesteading Workshops – Updates

The “Everything Corn!” cooking workshop scheduled for August 11 has been cancelled due to nobody signing up. There’s still space in the two remaining summer workshops. Sign up by email or phone (237-0996).

  • Building a Rain Barrel System – 2 to 4 p.m., Aug. 12 at 156 West Hamilton Ave.
  • Everything Tomato! Cooking Class – 9 a.m. to noon, Aug. 25 at Friends Meeting House

Still working on the Autumn workshop series – hope to have a full schedule ready for distribution and sign-ups by September 1.

Those are photos of the chicken coop building process, which started at the May 26 workshop and was recently finished – coordinated by Sarah and Josh Potter and Jackie Bonomo.

For readers interested in backyard chickens and easy-to-assemble pre-fabricated coops, the Ware brand Chick-n-Barn cost us about $300 when ordered through E&L Supply in Centre Hall and has worked well when attached to the Chick-n-Pen. Ware offers several types of backyard coop set-ups worth considering.

August 7 – Local Chefs to Compete for Boalsburg Farmers Market Golden Basket Award

Customers at our many fine local restaurants place their orders and waiters magically produce delicious food, but most know little about what happens in the kitchen or who is preparing the dishes. Likewise, the chefs working in the kitchen rarely have a chance to meet their guests beyond an occasionally brief hello.

August 4th to 7th is Local Foods Week, an appropriate time for restaurant goers and chefs to get acquainted. On August 7th, The Boalsburg Farmers Market is sponsoring an event that provides an excellent opportunity to do so. Chefs from six local establishments will compete for the Market’s Golden Basket Award, using fresh ingredients from market vendors and preparing it right at the market in front of our guests. Each chef will present a plate featuring a main dish and two sides to a panel of five judges, and many will offer samples of their work for the public to taste.

The participating chefs include:

  • Jamie Steffen (American Alehouse)
  • Zach Lorber (Foxdale)
  • Harrison Schailey (Harrison’s)
  • Andrew Monk (Nittany Lion Inn)
  • Pete Herncane (Otto’s)
  • Craig Hamilton (Village at Penn State)

The Judges, who will select the winner of this year’s Golden Basket Award, are

  • State College Mayor Elizabeth Goreham,
  • WPSU’s Patty Satalia,
  • Peter Bordi, Director of Penn State’s Center for Food Innovation,
  • local food writer Michele Marchetti, and
  • Kevin Kassab, Director of State College’s Department of Health.

This free event will take place from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at the regular Tuesday, Aug. 7 Boalsburg Farmers Market at the Pennsylvania Military Museum, Business Route 322, Boalsburg. There is ample, convenient free parking for the event at the market.

News from Way Fruit Farm

Peaches, Peaches, Peaches!  The peach variety Tri-O-Gem are now ready.  They are yellow, freestone peaches that are good for eating, baking, canning or freezing. Sweet & juicy; we hope you’ll enjoy some today!

Corn, Corn ,Corn!  With continued warm weather and just enough rain, our corn fields continue to produce really well!  Come on out if you want to have a dozen corn at your next dinner or picnic, or buy a bushel for canning or freezing this weekend.

Cantaloupe, Cantaloupe, Cantaloupe too!  Local cantaloupes are in full swing and they have been juicy and flavorful so far!  We have plenty of them at the farm along with other local vegetables, watermelon, plums and a few varieties of early apples.

September 6 – High Tunnel Production Workshop at Rock Springs

Capital Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) Area Council is sponsoring a high tunnel production workshop at the Penn State Horticulture Research Center, Rock Springs, PA, on Thursday, Sept. 6 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Penn State Department of Horticulture researchers will discuss the background of the high tunnel production systems and the many options for high tunnel construction.  Workshop topics also include producing vegetable and small fruit crops with high tunnel systems, disease control, and soil and nutrient management.  NRCS staff will outline the technical and financial assistance available to eligible producers interested in installing and utilizing high tunnel systems.

Registration cost for the event is $10 per person and includes the workshop materials. Pre-registration with payment is preferred and non-refundable.  Lunch will be available for an additional $10 fee.
