Recycling Old Bicycles – Tomorrow and March 25

Susannah Barsom

From Susannah Barsom:

Hello,

I’m writing to request your help with an event sponsored by the Centre Region Bicycle Coalition, Penn State Students Consulting for Non-Profit Organizations, and the Penn State Center for Sustainability.

Many of us have a functional but unused bicycle taking up space in our basement or garage. During your spring cleaning, please consider donating your bicycle to someone who would use it every day.

On Sunday, March 18 and Sunday, March 25 from 11AM to 4PM, the Center Region Bicycle Coalition (CRBC), Penn State Students Consulting for Non-Profit Organizations, and the Penn State Center for Sustainability, will be accepting donations of rideable bicycles at the Center for Sustainability’s MorningStar Solar Home (entrance at the corner of Porter Road and Dauer Road, just downhill from Medlar Field). These organizations are partnering with the Kallari Association of Ecuador to distribute used bicycles among the communities near Tena, Ecuador; the bikes will make it easier for children to attend school regularly (normally a two-to-three-hour walk each way).

More detailed information about donating, including guidelines, can be found at the CRBC website: www.centrebike.org and on our flier: BikeCollectionFlyer.

The organizations are requesting a $5-to-$10 contribution with each bicycle donation to help cover shipping costs. People delivering a bicycle between 1 PM and 4 PM on those Sundays, will have a chance to tour the MorningStar Home.

Thank you for your donations.

Susannah Barsom,  CRBC Executive Committee
