Penn State Community Food Security Club

The Community Food Security Club (CFS) is a relatively new, yet quickly growing student club at Penn State. The club was founded by Greta Righter and Leigh-Ann Charles who met at Power Shift, a renewable energy conference held every year in D.C., and were inspired to begin an on-campus food movement. CFS is dedicated to creating educational and engagement opportunities for Penn State students interested in any and all aspects of sustainable food systems – from production to consumption.

In past years, CFS has raised money for the State College CROP Walk, screened movies like Food Inc., participated in Earth Day celebrations, managed a garden plot at the PSU Community Garden, and created a poster for Interfaith Power and Light highlighting the correlations between greenhouse gases and the American diet (currently on display in the State College Municipal Building). CFS members also run an afterschool nutrition education program at the Young Scholars of Central PA charter school.

This fall semester the club has been busier than ever with potlucks, gardening, making home-pressed apple cider, a renewable energy festival, and attending on campus speaker events. Recently the club organized a farm tour to Elk Creek Café for an incredible brunch, Stone Meadow Farms for delicious cheese making, Young American Growers to meet Jay and Laura Young’s goats, and Black Walnut farm in Centre Hall for a sunset bonfire.

Some plans for the rest of the semester include: more potlucks, beehive construction projects, home-brewing workshops (for those of age), a club hayride, a downtown bake sale to raise money and student awareness, and a trip to Lancaster Buy Fresh Buy Local (in collaboration with the Community, Environment, and Development club). As students concerned with community food security, we are always looking for opportunities to engage and collaborate with the local residents of State College. We are always eager for a chance to gather and share new ideas, stories, and of course, good food.
