Shaver's Creek Bird Cup & Native Plant Sale

Friday, May 6–Saturday, May 7 (24-hours – 7:00 p.m.–7:00 p.m.)

The Birding Cup, Shaver’s Creek’s annual fund-raising tournament, is a contest among teams of birders to identify the most number of bird species in a twenty-four-hour period in the central Pennsylvania region (Huntingdon, Centre, and adjoining counties). The Cup selects winning teams in four categories:

  • the Birding Cup goes to the team that identifies the most species overall;
  • the County Cup goes to the team that finds the most species while searching in only one county;
  • the Potter Mug is for the best team with at least half of its members with less than two years of birding experience;
  • the Birding Boot goes to the team that identifies the most species traveling only by non-motorized means (walking, biking, canoeing).

Our fund-raising goal for this year’s Birding Cup is $12,000. Pledges may be made per bird species identified or in a single donation, and donors may choose to support a specific team. Teams may download a sample Pledge Form HERE. For more information, visit our website or contact our office at ShaversCreek@outreach.psu.edu or by phone at 814-863-2000 or 814-667-3424. Donors can make secure, online donations. (Team-specific donations can be noted in the “Additional Information” box at the bottom of the donation page.)

This special weekend combines our annual Birding Cup fundraiser with the PA Native Plant Society’s Native Plant Celebration & Sale:

Saturday, May 7 – Native Plant Celebration & Sale (11:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.)

Shaver’s Creek is excited to partner with the Pennsylvania Native Plant Society this year to host their annual Native Plant Celebration & Sale. This year we will celebrate the interrelationships between native plants and our resident bird species with the combination of the Plant Sale and our 24-hour Birding Cup fundraiser on the same weekend. A portion of the proceeds from the Native Plant Sale will also go to support Shaver’s Creek.

More info on the Plant Sale, including native plant vendors, food vendors, and programs and walks offered throughout the day, can be found HERE or HERE. Download a PDF flyer.

Plant Sale attendees will also have the opportunity to donate to their favorite Birding Cup team, and/or purchase $10 raffle tickets to win a pair of Nikon Action 7×35 binoculars! Call us at 814-863-2000 or email ShaversCreek@outreach.psu.edu with any questions. Visit our website  for a list of upcoming programs and events at Shaver’s Creek.
